Corn Starch
Corn starch is a commonly used excipient in tablets and often serves as a filler, disintegrant, and binder in solid dosage forms. It is widely used in the preparation of tablets, pills, capsules, powders, pastes, and other pharmaceutical formulations.
Starch is also used as a volume adjuster during the filling of hard capsules. In the formulation design of tablets, freshly prepared starch at a concentration of 5%-25% (W/W) is used as a binder for tablet granules. The dosage in the preparation is determined through optimization studies. The screening parameters include granule friability, tablet friability, hardness, disintegration time, and drug dissolution rate. Starch is the most commonly used disintegrant, with a typical concentration range of 3%-15% (W/W). Ordinary starch has poor compressibility, leading to fragile tablets, and is prone to capping at high concentrations. In granulation formulations, half of the starch used as a disintegrant is added during granulation, and the other half is incorporated during the mixing of dry granules. As a disintegrant, starch exhibits the characteristics of a Type II adsorption isotherm and has a large surface area, which is conducive to water absorption.
Starch is also used as an excipient in novel drug delivery systems, such as those for nasal mucosa, oral cavity, and periodontal tissue delivery. It is also applied in topical preparations: for example, due to its absorbent properties, it is used in human talcum powder and acts as a skin covering in ointment formulations. Starch paste is also used as an emollient and as a base material for preparing enemas to treat iodine poisoning. Therapeutically, rice starch solution is used to prevent or treat dehydration caused by severe diarrheal diseases.
This product is a white or off-white amorphous powder, odorless, with a slightly sweet taste.
In pharmaceutical preparations, this product functions as a binder, 成型 agent (forming agent), thickener, filler, and emulsion stabilizer.
